Professional Development

Opportunities for educators in partner districts.

GEAR UP Iowa is committed to providing and supporting professional opportunities for educators in partner districts.

GEAR UP Iowa school districts and their students will benefit from significantly increasing professional development for counselors, particularly in organizing school responses to subgroups of students experiencing academic and/or behavioral barriers. Utilizing professional development systems in place from the AEAs and the Iowa State Education Associate, GEAR UP Iowa will maximize the quality and flexibility of the training to ensure training goals and objectives are met, and that those trained receive follow up support in implementing their training. Additionally, where knowledge gaps are identified, GEAR UP Iowa will provide opportunities for teacher professional development in advising areas like student non-cognitive skill development and in curricular areas.

GEAR UP Iowa is a member of the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships (NCCEP), a national non-profit, non-partisan organization working to increase access to higher education for economically disadvantage students. NCCEP advances college access through advocacy, training, and research. NCCEP is host to an annual conference and a capacity building workshop each year. Representatives from GEAR UP Iowa schools will be selected to attend the annual conference each year along with GEAR UP Iowa staff from Iowa College Aid.
